Appraisal Firm Remote Work Tips for Success
[fusion_dropcap boxed=”no” boxed_radius=”” class=”” id=”” color=””]C[/fusion_dropcap]oronavirus closings, remote work recommendations and general “social distancing” mean many appraisal office leaders have made the call to send their teams to work at home. If your team CAN work remotely, here are some tips to help everyone stay connected and productive. If your team CANNOT work remotely, I have a suggestion for that too, at the end.
-
Set clear expectations
Clear expectations for appraisal firm remote work is no different than any other kind of management. Teams are always more successful when each person knows what the business expects of them. Then, of course, ask each of your team members what they need from you so you can help them succeed. Clear communication needed here, which brings us to the next item.
-
Over-communicate
As the manager, it’s important to keep everyone informed by email, check in by phone as needed and ensure they know you are there to help them. For your teams, ask them to keep each other – and you – updated regularly too. For anyone new to remote work, it might even seem like they are being annoying or over-sharing. On the contrary, when people know what’s going on, everything works better.
-
Try out some new tech
At realquantum, we are fans of Slack for instant messaging. We find the free version to be sufficient. Do you have a Voice Over IP service or conferencing service for clients? If so, put them to use with your team too. There are a ton of options for appraisal firm telecommuting, but you can get Zoom for limited use for free, or join a plan to support longer calls and more people. If you are a Microsoft 365 or Google G-Suite subscriber, chat and video conferencing are both available. Or, just pick up the phone.
-
Manage by work output, not just clock hours
When some managers can’t see their teams, they wonder if they are still working. In the commercial appraisal business, this is not as likely to be an issue compared to other industries. After all, appraisers are often paid on production. Analysts and appraiser assistants are often working directly and in frequent contact. Of course, when employees are paid hourly, the clock time matters too. Consider a daily status email with one or two sentences and their schedule. Or, try a time reporting app. There are a ton out there.
-
Be understanding
The expectation I give my team in normal circumstances is to set up a home office free of distractions that allows them to focus on work, and then put it aside at the end of the day for personal time. In a world of Coronavirus closings, schools are out and daycare centers are closing. So, employees with children may not have the clear lines they once did. No easy answer here. We don’t know how long this will last, but eventually, it will pass.
What If You Can’t Work Remote Today?
Unfortunately, not everyone is well-suited to appraisal firm remote work. There are desktop computers, local servers and the exchange of electronic and paper files. However, there is an alternative! Realquantum is the commercial real estate appraisal application that is 100% on the web. All you need is a web browser and an internet connection. Realquantum users can work anywhere and stay productive.
