The Spectre of a Meltdown

[fusion_dropcap boxed=”no” boxed_radius=”” class=”” id=”” color=””]T[/fusion_dropcap]here’s been a lot of noise lately about two big security flaws in nearly every general computing device on the planet. The flaws have names to match the hype: Spectre and Meltdown. These flaws are esoteric and difficult to exploit. Only the most sophisticated national intelligence program or hacker ring (or both!) could accomplish this kind of attack. There is a good article on theHustle that covers this subject and lays it out in simple terms.

Is this a real issue?

Yes, but it’s not a new discovery. This stuff has been around for much of my career, but nobody outside deep tech was aware of it. Knowing how difficult it would be to exploit these weaknesses, most folks just ignored these as theoretical weaknesses. But now the cat is out of the bag!

Is it likely to affect any of us individually? No, so long as we keep our machines updated. Remember, keep your software and your OS up to date!

Is it going to be an issue on the realquantum cloud platform? No, since AWS issued patches almost immediately.

These flaws are so subtle and transient that only a super-powerful agency could have the means and the determination to exploit these “spectre” and “meltdown” weaknesses. Only the most valuable, hardened targets would warrant the effort behind such an attack, targets like national security archives and credit bureaus.

Seriously, this isn’t the kind of attack we need to fear. It is far easier and cheaper for the bad guys to get at our data by exploiting the weakest links in the system, and that’s not the processors. It’s us! Stay frosty, keep up your guard, use two-factor authentication on the important stuff, and don’t get phished!
